50+ How to Look After Yourself
Dr Hilary Jones, of Breakfast TV, shares his advice on keeping healthy for the over 50s
Staying healthy and feeling your best is important at any age and doesn’t change just because you have a few more grey hairs or feel like you are suffering from ‘diminishing youth’ which is how I like to refer to it!
As we grow older, we experience an increasing number of major life changes, including career changes and retirement, children leaving home, the loss of loved ones, and physical changes. How we handle and grow from these changes is key to staying healthy.
Here are some of my top tips for keeping healthy as you get older;
- Improve the quality of your sleep by doing more exercise – get outdoors and enjoy the day in fresh air and avoid all caffeinated drinks after 3pm.
- Keep Laughing. Re-watch your funniest favourite films or delve into a humorous book.
- Take the effort to go out and dine or socialise.
- Spoil yourself consider a massage, manicure or professional shave.
- Exercise your brain. Consider a new hobby, sport or past-time that you can enjoy with your partner or friends. Do crosswords, Sudoku or Scrabble.
- Enjoy music and dance. Remember Nelson Mandela always dancing about. He kept pretty young didn’t he?
- Look up old friends. Write a few letters or send a few e-mails, keep in touch.
- Book a holiday somewhere special. It really gives you something to look forward to.
- Cut back on alcohol and choose quality wines rather than larger bottles of plonk.
- Have annual checks for things like cholesterol, hearing and BMI as well as eye tests and dental check-ups. Checks like these can often identify other medical issues too.
Look out for organisations running free health and wellbeing events in your area. High Street hearing experts Hidden Hearing are launching Hear’s to Health – a new campaign to encourage people to get their hearing checked and educate about the links between untreated hearing loss and the potential risks of developing other more serious health conditions.
New research carried out by healthcare specialists, Hidden Hearing, reveals that two thirds of Brits feel younger than their years, with a third feeling a staggering 10-20 years their junior!
The survey highlighted that despite knowing that senses are so important to quality of life, 75% of us are getting our eyes checked regularly but less than 35% have ever had their hearing checked!
In addition to lifestyle habits and physical health, the research also looked at the UK’s perceived cognitive function. Over half of those surveyed had noticed a decline in their memory and one in two people regularly forget people’s names. However, the majority were unaware that there is a link between hearing loss and mental decline such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. So our hearing is really important and we need to ensure we’re getting it checked regularly.
